DMT has recently issued the “Dark Sky Policy” which aims to elevate the quality of life in the emirate by upholding the highest standards and prioritizing the health and safety of residents. It establishes sustainable guidelines to ensure the preservation of natural environmental initiatives.
The policy is applicable to various settings including public buildings, streets, parks, beaches, commercial establishments, open spaces, agricultural, and industrial areas, among others. The policy encompasses measures such as regulated exterior lighting, motion-activated security lights, and coordinated shutdown of non-essential lighting at midnight.
The objectives and procedures of this policy can be summarized as follows:
• Minimizing light and visual pollution.
• Facilitating sustainable development by adopting new lighting technologies.
• Safeguarding wildlife habitats.
• Supporting astronomical research.
• Promoting public health initiatives.
Under this policy, stakeholders are granted a specific timeframe to comply with the regulations. Temporary lighting arrangements for events like festivals and celebrations are exempted from this policy.
The activation of security lighting through motion sensors commences at midnight.
