Equal pay for men and women in the private sector

The United Arab Emirates has always been a champion of gender equality, the UAE has made great strides over the past few years in supporting diversity and gender equality in the workplace, led by the efforts of the government and the Gender Balance Council.

Besides being at the forefront of promoting women empowerment in the region, it has been ranked first in the world when it comes to women’s representation in parliament. These efforts have been given a legal shape now, by modifying the law as well.

The President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, issued Federal Law No. 6 of 2020, where the first article states that women and men must have the same salaries if they hold the same position or if they are doing the same type of work.

The new update in the law in Article 32 of Federal Law No. 8 of 1980 on labour relations has aimed women empowerment, the policy is an effort to encourage more female talents to join the private sector.

According to WAM, the implementation of equal wages for women and men in private sectors in UAE has been implemented already from Friday, Sept 25th 2020.

The Article states “Female employees shall receive wages equal to that of males if they perform the same work or another of equal value. The procedures, controls and standards necessary for evaluating work of equal value will be set under a decision to be issued by the Cabinet, based on a proposal from the Minister of Human Resources and Emiratization.”

This step will undoubtedly boost the social inclusivity of women, support their role in national development, and advance the UAE’s status on the world’s Gender Equality Index.

The new government procedures and controls will determine the requirement of equal wages for jobs of equal value without differentiating gender and market standards will be used as a reference in wage assessments.
